FWACAA Breaks Ground on New Education Facility at Smith Field Airport
FORT WAYNE, IN – Construction is beginning on the new Smith Field/Ivy Tech Aviation Maintenance Technology Facility and a groundbreaking ceremony has been scheduled for Tuesday, December 5th at 3 PM. Upon opening, the facility will house the Powerplant portion of the FAA certified Airframe & Powerplant License. The Powerplant program educates students in the maintenance and repair of an aircraft’s engines. This project has been “fast tracked” in order to begin offering courses in the fall of 2007. FWACAA and Ivy Tech are already in the planning stages to develop a larger facility to house both an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) program. The Airframe program is designed to teach students about the repair and maintenance of the hull of the aircraft and will complete the FAA’s traditional A&P license.
“For the past five years, FWACAA management has been laying groundwork for an Aviation Maintenance school that would be a community asset, providing new educational and career opportunities for local youth while opening new doors to economic development for the region. Working in partnership with Ivy Tech, Anthis Career Center, the City of Fort Wayne and the Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance, FWACAA draws closer towards realizing this goal by breaking ground on this new facility at Smith Field.” states Kristi Holmes, Community & Government Affairs Manager for FWACAA.
The Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority (FWACAA) was created in 1985 and is responsible for managing the Smith Field and Fort Wayne International Airports. Smith Field is situated on 250 acres of land approximately 5 miles north of downtown Fort Wayne and serves Northeast Indiana’s general aviation community. Under FWACAA, Smith Field is striving to grow general aviation in the region by introducing new aeronautical education opportunities, improving facilities, and pursuing new service providers.
